Does 'bimonthly' mean 'twice a month' or 'every two months'?

ShareThis

We picked up this interesting fact while searching for the correct answer to the above mentioned question..

We recently decided to change our monthly newsletter "Freshly Brewed" from a monthly newsletter to every second month to ensure decent articles and not just to fill the newsletter. As quality is always better than quantity when weighed against each other.

Our understanding is that "bimonthly" means twice a month where Oxford Dictionary says the following:
Unfortunately it means both! In the publishing industry, though, it's used fairly consistently to mean 'every two months', so that a bimonthly magazine is generally one that's issued every two months. The same ambiguity affects biweekly and biyearly. If you want to be absolutely clear, it's best to use a phrase such as 'twice a week' or 'every two years'.

So to not confuse anyone..our newsletter "Freshly Brewed" will be released every second month.
