The future of flash and mobile website content providers
Yesterday Apple announced at their World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) their new updated mobile operating system called iOS5. We're not a tech blog but this is key to remember when developing your website as the stats shows that this platform is a ever-growing platform.
Stats from Apple WWDC conference: 200 million iOS (mobile) devices sold, 25million iPads sold in 14months, 15 billion songs sold on iTunes, 130 million books sold through iBooks, 90 000 apps available solely for iPad, Apple has paid out 2.5 billion dollars to developers of apps, 14 billion app downloads, 225 million credit card attached accounts.
Apple is no longer the small company that makes expensive computers, they are one of the leading innovators in the industry and they clearly have the backing of the industry with stats like these. So what does this mean for your business? You need to make sure that your company website is compatible across all platforms and all media devices.
iOS as an operating system does not support Flash content. This was a decision made by Apple founder Steve Jobs because as he states in this letter, that Adobe is making their Flash players too heavy, a believe that is shared by Microsoft's founder Bill Gates.
As you are well aware, flash is a very popular way of showing content and at the very least very popular in creating flashy banners on websites. What this means is that when browsing to these flash-rich websites on an iPhone or iPad, you won't see any flash-objects. That is why we chose not to use an flash-objects on our website as this is the future of the internet and the mobile market. And this is why you shouldn't use flash content on your website if you want to cater for all platforms across all media devices.
